How to successfully keep land hermit crabs as pets?

catluvrfortysomething asked:

I want to start a crabitat to keep land hermit crabs as pets. What do I need to know to keep a livable crabitat for them and keep them alive for a long time? How do I set up the crabitat and molting tank? I’ve kept ‘hermies’ before but they’ve always fared poorly because I never could find info on crabitats and keeping them healthy. Anyone and anything that can help is much appreciated!

Get a fish tank and put those small rocks at the bottom but dont fill the tank with water. Instead have a very small pool of water for it. No more than a quarter of an inch deep. When it comes to molting just keep a veriety of shells inside so that when it wants to molt it has alot of options.

well, if youre gonna have a lot, youll need to have a big cage, like 2ft by 1ft. and thats BIG for a little guy. for just like 5, about 1ft by 1ft. a good idea is to put sand in the cage, (they sell it at petstores) and move it to one side, slightly larger than the other side without sand. the side without sand, you fill with water. have the sand about an inch above the water with a slope. you need to always have WATER! they also sell hermitcrab feed at stores. for the water, you need to have a couple natural sponges that are soaked. you can have a water bowl too. you should get some things for them to climb on, THEY LOVE CLIMBING!!!!!!!!
hope you have fun with your hermies!
